When your refrigerator kicks on, the evaporator fan, condenser fan, and compressor fan all run at the same time. That makes it difficult to pinpoint the cause of unusual sounds to tell where the damaged part is located. However, how well the refrigerator is working can provide additional clues too. Here's a look at what causes strange sounds in your refrigerator and how they're repaired.
Compressor Fan Problems
The compressor helps regulate temperature in your refrigerator. The motor controls a fan that keeps controls cool, and when it goes bad, a number of things can happen. The refrigerator might not cool very well, the fan might not start, or it might keep clicking on and off. By the time you hear an unusual sound associated with the compressor, it's probably damaged beyond repair. A service tech might need to replace the entire motor, but the electronics and fan blades can also be checked to make sure it can't be repaired first.
Condenser Fan Malfunction
The condenser coils are usually on the back of the refrigerator. They're responsible for keeping your refrigerator cool. If there's a problem with the condenser fan, then your refrigerator might make buzzing or clicking noises. It might also cycle on and off frequently, and the temperature may be too warm inside. The condenser fan blows over the coils to keep them cool, and it also helps with the evaporation of the condensation in the drip pan below the refrigerator.
A malfunction of this fan could be caused by debris such as grime and bits of food. The blades could also be scraping against something and causing noise. It's also possible the fan has a bad motor, and when that's the case, the motor needs to be replaced so that your refrigerator starts cooling properly again. Problems with the condenser fan can often be avoided by pulling out the refrigerator and vacuuming off the coils to keep dust and hairs out of the system. When you hear noises coming from the bottom of the refrigerator, this could indicate a problem with the condenser fan.
Evaporator Fan Issues
The evaporator fan is in your freezer, so if the unusual noise seems to be coming from there, then it helps pinpoint the problem. Issues with the evaporator fan could be due to ice buildup which can be remedied by defrosting. It's also possible the blades have been damaged by ice, bent, or come loose. If so, a service technician can replace the blades. The fan motor might also be damaged, in which case it must be replaced.
